There are always people claiming themselves to be ‘humanist’ asking for equal rights to both male and female when clearly they are opposing feminist in a so called none offensable way.
While asking for equality is very valid, equity is a necessity.
Equality is not possible until and unless the male and female of society both are equally viewed.
And in a patriarchal society like Nepal asking for equality is like asking a cow for an egg which is not possible because the cow will produce what it is capable of. Similarly, our society is only capable of viewing male as superior and females as merely anything. Hence, it is foolish to ask for equality without the presence of equity.
The path of equity itself is still far from us, the major blame for this are not our grandparents but those opposing feminist and wanting humanist.
Women have been suffering from the very existence of society, they have been looked down, called bad on and much worse. The situation is still not better.
Providing rights without proper implementation, making a women commission responsible to just recommend the government is not enough to build equity in society. And not at all effective to change the so-called humanist mindset of society.
Men are born with unlimited privileges either in terms of education, job or marriage simply in every aspect of life. Asking for more and in comparison with women knowing how poorly women are treated regardless of various is a shame.
But this in no way means that men should be looked down on or shouldn’t be considered in the law making process.
Asking for rights and laws to protect our life, liberty and property is essential for all regardless of any gender. But suppressing the other gender just because they are getting special privileges as compensation for all the ill treatment from centuries is no way a right behavior.
So, what can we do?
The very first step would be to work for equity rather than equality. Achieving equality is a step wise process and the very first step is to make sure the people in society have equal standards which is only possible through the principle of equity.
And ofcourse not building a toxic humanist nature.
